Want to Dance but Afraid to? Don't be...even the Bible says to do it!

Updated: Jan 31

Take that dance class, learn to two-step, and go out dancing!

How did we miss it? All those verses in the Bible that command us to dance! How did the IFB decide that was the command that they would refuse to obey God on and none of us pointed it out.

Don't believe me?

Jeremiah 31:4

"I will build you up again, and you, Virgin Israel, will be rebuilt. Again you will take up your timbrels and go out to dance with the joyful."

Psalm 149:3-4

"Let them praise his name with dancing and make music to him with timbrel and harp. For the LORD takes delight in his people; he crowns the humble with victory."

Jeremiah 31:12-13

"Then young women will dance and be glad, young men and old as well. I will turn their mourning into gladness; I will give them comfort and joy instead of sorrow."

Psalm 150

"Praise the LORD.Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens. Praise him for his acts of power; praise him for his surpassing greatness. Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet, praise him with the harp and lyre, praise him with timbrel and dancing, praise him with the strings and pipe, praise him with the clash of cymbals, praise him with resounding cymbals. Let everything that has breath praise the LORD. Praise the LORD."

Ecclesiastes 3:4

"A time to weep and a time to laugh; A time to mourn and a time to dance."

Psalm 30:11

"You have turned for me my mourning into dancing"

Psalm 149:3

"Let them praise His name with dancing; Let them sing praises to Him with timbrel and lyre."

Psalm 150:4

"Praise Him with timbrel and dancing; Praise Him with stringed instruments and pipe."

Jeremiah 31:13

“Then the virgin will rejoice in the dance, And the young men and the old, together,

For I will turn their mourning into joy And will comfort them and give them joy for their sorrow."

IFB started in the early 1970s when women wore mini skirts and guys wore their hair long. They believed that the free love movement was wrong and leading young people into sin and therefore must be condemned. (Ironically, the Bible says to dance and that men should wear their hair long.)

So, was it really a revelation from God or a knee jerk reaction to the culture?

If you've left the IFB, deciding it's okay to dance can be hard. I know...people not raised in this religion would completely not get the "grave danger" of shaking your hips! They don't understand that it disgraces your family, condemns you by your church, and makes your Heavenly Father very angry.

But you've left. You can now reprogram your brain and your feet to dance! Even if you start small and dance at a wedding or in your kitchen when making dinner. There are a ton of exercise classes that feature dance moves. Take a ballroom dance class with a friend or partner.

Just like allowing yourself to watch movies, listen to music with syncopated beats, swearing or having a gay friend...it's all the same. You decide what you want to do with your life and just know that now is "a time to dance."
